Construction Starts on New Gigafactory

First pillar ceremony to mark the start of construction on Envision AESC UK's new gigafactory in Sunderland was held on Friday 9th December.

We attended a traditional Japanese first pillar ceremony on Friday 9th December to mark the start of construction on Envision AESC UK’s new gigafactory in Sunderland and to celebrate ten years of electric vehicle battery production in Sunderland.

As part of the Wates team, Desco are designing the mechanical and electrical services for the new state-of-the-art facility which will be powered by 100% Net Zero Carbon energy and manufacture enough batteries to power 100,000 electric vehicles annually.

The facility is being built on the International Advance Manufacturing Park (IAMP) and is part of a £1bn partnership with Sunderland City Council and Nissan to create an electric vehicle hub supporting next generation electric vehicle production and accelerating the shift to net zero carbon mobility.

Desco designed the MEP services for the first battery plant in Sunderland which has been supplying batteries to Nissan for the LEAF for the last 10 years and we are delighted to be part of the team to develop this new scaled up gigafactory facility for Envision AESC.
