MetroCentre Bus Station

MetroCentre Public Transport Interchange

Europe’s largest shopping centre, the MetroCentre, which is located in Gateshead, opened in 1986 and has progressively expanded over the years and now has 4,300,000sq ft of retail floor space. With a takeover in 2013 by Intu Properties, the MetroCentre has undergone some major redevelopments, of which Desco has provided its services.

Desco have been involved in a number of the redevelopment works at the MetroCentre, providing mechanical and electrical design services. This included the redevelopment of the former bus station to create a new state-of-the-art Public Transport Interchange.

The former bus station was demolished whilst retaining the same services for visitors to the centre. The new Public Transport Interchange is located at the end of the blue mall and provides an improved bus link to many parts of the North East and also accommodates coaches.

The project involved the construction of the Transport Interchange and also new roads and infrastructure improvements, including a new bridge which spans over the main Carlisle to Newcastle railway
