The Regent Wins Building Project of the Year & City Hall Highly Commended at CENE 2022 Awards
The 2022 Constructing Excellence North East Awards were held on Friday 17th June at the Grand, Gosforth Park Hotel, a celebration of the most prestigious built environment projects in the North East.
In its seventeenth year, the Constructing Excellence North East Awards celebrate everything the North East built environment has to be proud of with winners selected across various categories including Innovation, Integration & Collaborative Working, Value, Digital Construction and MMC.
This year Desco were part of the design team of two projects shortlisted for the awards; The Regent, Redcar was shortlisted in the Building Project of the Year category and City Hall, shortlisted for both Building Project of the Year and also Integration & Collaborative Working.
We were delighted to see both projects recognised for their achievements as The Regent, Redcar was announced winner of the Building Project of the Year award and City Hall was Highly Commended in the same category.
The Regent, Redcar is a stunning three-storey art deco-style cinema building on Redcar seafront and includes 3 screen rooms, café-bar with panoramic sea views and events space for the public use. “The technical challenges on this scheme were immense and required a project team with incredible expertise and vision to introduce innovative solutions and modelling activity for successful delivery of the project. Working in an inshore UK marine area and the environmental implications of a neighbouring Site of Special Scientific Interest required careful planning and management, whilst weather conditions presented a constant challenge. Despite all this, the scheme was completed two weeks early and has already won the hearts of the local community.”

City Hall is the new home of Sunderland City Council and a range of other public sector support organisations. The new ‘hub’ development comprises of two linked 5 and 7 storey buildings connected by a large glass atrium and features Grade A Office space, council chambers, courts, mayoral and political party offices. “The highly commended award goes to a project that has brought significant investment into the region, supporting regeneration and growth in the North East. The building’s environmental impact was integral to the design, and the embodied carbon is 20% lower than that of a typical building, with further carbon savings possible through careful maintenance.”
