Travelodge — River View House
Located on the quayside of Newcastle, the former BT office building had been vacant for five years until it recently underwent a refurbishment to create a new 200 bed hotel. Overlooking the River Tyne, the south of the hotel provides views down the river of the city’s seven famous bridges.
Desco were appointed by Union Property Services to deliver the mechanical and electrical design engineering services on the conversion of an existing office building into a 200 bed Travelodge hotel, taking the total in Newcastle up to four, with a further five within the region.
The former office buildings, which was made up of part new build and part renovation, were joined to create one large mixed-use building. This has created a large glass front entrance and reception to the building. Alongside the Travelodge hotel, a conversion to create approximately 60,000 sq. ft. of grade A office space will also be created and will all be accessed from a new central core.
The south-facing courtyard of the former buildings is being converted into a new waterfront bar/restaurant, which will maximise the potential of the prime location. The proposed waterfront bar/restaurant will benefit from a first-floor balcony to take advantage of the river views.
In converting the former office block into the popular hotel chain, it was envisaged to bring life back to the western end of the Quayside.
