Sunderland Royal Hospital

Desco enjoys an excellent ongoing working relationship with the City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust Estates team and have worked together on a number of projects in recent years.

All of the projects we have delivered to date for the Trust have been refurbishment schemes on a ‘live’ 24-hour hospital site, which was required to remain fully operational throughout the design and construction process. This demanded careful coordination of works and sensitive interfacing with existing services in order to avoid any disruption to the operation of the site and its end users. Due consideration was given to a variety of alternatives including phasing, decants and provision of temporary accommodation and carrying out works during quieter periods. Specific projects include:

Accident and Emergency Department –

We were appointed to deliver the M&E design services associated with a major redevelopment and upgrade of the accident and emergency department of this existing city centre general hospital campus. The redesigned areas will comprise an extension to five of the existing floors to provide new, improved arrival point, reception and waiting areas, assessment, consultation and treatment areas, specialist rooms for resuscitation, isolation, x-ray, ultra-sound, scanning, high dependency, laboratories and a pharmacy.

New Endoscopy Theatre –

Desco designed the M&E services for the decant and relocation of the endoscopy department, to bring it up to clinical standards.

Upgrade of Theatre C3 –

We designed the M&E services for the refurbishment of this existing theatre to create a cardiovascular hybrid theatre with ultra clean ventilation.

X-Ray Department Refurbishment –

We delivered the M&E design associated with the refurbishment of four suites within the hospital’s x-ray department. The project comprised the provision of new x-ray equipment and associated services to suites 5, 6, 7 and 9 of the department, which was required to remain operational throughout the works. The works were phased in order to maintain this level of service to the department.

Laminar Flow Theatre Suite D3 –

Initially, Desco was appointed to undertake a feasibility study for the proposed upgrade and refurbishment of an existing operating theatre within the Sunderland Royal Hospital – Theatre D3, to provide an ultra-clean laminar flow theatre suite. Following the survey and feasibility report, we received the appointment to carry out the design for the theatre suite and the associated plant.
