North Shields Transport Hub

The transport hub was opened by North Tyneside's elected mayor Dame Norma Redfearn in September 2023.

Desco were appointed to design the M&E services for the new North Shields Transport Hub. The North Shields Transport Hub brings bus services from across the town to one location, closer to the Metro, taxis and cycling infrastructure in the town.

The hub was designed to be North Tyneside Council’s first net zero carbon building. Sustainable elements to the build include air source heat pumps, an enhanced building envelope to maximise airtightness and an array of PV solar panels which will generate more energy per annum than the hub is expected to use.

A Life Cycle Carbon Assessment was undertaken to reduce the embodied carbon footprint of the project. This was done by assessing the design at the earliest stage then amending the design to use techniques, products and materials to reduce the embodied carbon by a target of 40%. The hub is part of the council’s wider aim to be carbon net-zero by 2030.

The hub includes Changing Places toilets which offer extra equipment and space for people with disabilities and real-time information displays for local bus, Metro and ferry services.
