Discovery Special Academy

Desco designed the mechanical and electrical services on a new special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school in Middlesbrough.

The newly constructed £10m Discovery Special Academy which opened in October 2022 is Middlesbrough’s first free school for children with special education needs and offers specialist educational provision for more than 100 children aged between 4 and 11 years old.

Discovery Special Academy is part of Tees Valley Education Multi Academy Trust and was constructed to help meet the growing demand for special educational needs places in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.

The school includes a range of specialist facilities including therapy suites to support a wide range of complex learning, communication, physical and medical needs. The purpose-built therapeutic and educational provision will also act as a regional hub for services and partners including NHS physiotherapists and a range of occupational therapists and sensory experts.

The new school offers a number of facilities to pupils, including a multi-use games area, an indoor multi-functional hall, 2 x soft informal play and social areas, 3 x hard-standing play areas and a soft PE area including sports pitch.
