The new-build Cozenton Leisure Centre has replaced the original leisure centre in Rainham

As part of the S&P team, Desco have designed the MEP services for Splashes Sports Centre, now known as Cozenton Leisure Centre.

Built on behalf of Medway Council, the new £23m building has been constructed on the former leisure centre site, whilst the former leisure centre remained fully operational, before being demolished once the new Cozenton Leisure Centre officially opened in July 2024. The original plans of revamping the former facilities were abandoned due to surveys identifying significant structural issues.

The two-storey leisure centre facilities include two swimming pools – a children’s pool with flume, wave ball and beach area, and a 25-metre training pool for lane swimming and lessons. Accessible facilities are provided throughout to serve all members of the community, including the elderly, less mobile, children and young people. It also includes a gym and a multipurpose room for exercise classes and children’s parties; Family and accessible changing rooms are being created, as well as a café overlooking Cozenton Park.

To support Medway Councils sustainability ambitions, the centre has been designed with low energy at its heart, taking design principles from Passivhaus to reduce energy consumption as much as practicable, achieving an A rated EPC. The building incorporates many innovative technologies including photovoltaics, CO2 ASHP’s to provide high efficiency hot water, separate ASHP’s for space heating and a water source VRF waste heat recovery system to recoup waste heat from the gym to heat the pool water for free. Cycle storage and electric vehicle charging points have also been installed as part of the development.
