Cozenton Leisure Centre

The new-build Cozenton Leisure Centre has replaced the original leisure centre in Rainham

As part of the S&P team, Desco designed the MEP services for the new Splashes Leisure Centre, now known as Cozenton Park Sports Centre.

Built on behalf of Medway Council, the new £23m building was constructed on the former Splashes Leisure Centre site in Rainham Kent. The new facility officially opened in July 2024 and was the first new council-built sports centre in Medway for over 30 years.

The new two-storey leisure centre facilities include two swimming pools – a children’s pool with flume, wave ball and beach area, and a 25-metre training pool for lane swimming and lessons. Accessible facilities are provided throughout to serve all members of the community, including the elderly, less mobile, children and young people. It also includes a gym and a multipurpose room for exercise classes and children’s parties; family and accessible changing rooms, as well as a café overlooking Cozenton Park.

To support Medway Councils sustainability ambitions, the building was designed with energy-efficiency in mind and achieved an EPC Rating A. Features include LED lighting throughout, heat pumps providing heating to the pool and powered by rooftop solar panels, water source VRF waste heat recovery system recouping waste heat from the gym to help heat the pool, high levels of insulation to minimise heat loss, and a building shape designed to reduce the surface area of external walls. Advanced technology is used to generate waves in the pool creating a ‘wave ball,’ which is estimated to consume less than 10% of the energy previously required for wave generation at the former Splashes centre. Cycle storage and electric vehicle charging points have also been installed as part of the development.
