Newcastle International Airport: Design & Engineering

Newcastle International Airport is located in the North East of England and currently handles approximately 5 million passengers. It is the main Regional Airport and has plans to expand to 10 million passengers by 2030. Desco enjoys a long-standing relationship with Newcastle International Airport and have delivered several schemes in Partnership with them including new build projects, extensions, remodelling, upgrades and refurbishment works.

The most recent scheme completed was the Mechanical and Electrical services design on the redevelopment of the departure lounge area at the Airport, to improve and upgrade the existing departure lounge areas on level 2 of the existing terminal building.

Our initial appointment was to develop the outline designs on behalf of the airport’s own projects team; we then developed the design through to detailed stage as part of the successful D&B contractor’s team.

The project comprised the strip out and reconfiguration of the existing southern section of the common departure lounge on the first floor of the terminal, involving the strip out of circulation areas and the existing concession/retail units, together with associated core services, followed by the provision of a new, fully fitted out public concourse area and the construction of new shell and core services for concession/retail units.

Previously Desco delivered the M&E design services on the £3.2m extension to the airports existing terminal building to create 5242sq. ft of additional space across three floors. The construction of the extension, to the south of the building, was rolled out in phases to ensure minimum disruption to customers and airport operations.

The newly created accommodation includes additional security search and has allowed the airport to double the number of lanes for screening hand luggage. In partnership with UK Border Agency, the airport’s immigration arrivals area has been redesigned to provide a more efficient use of space and increase the number of presentation desks from four to six
