Viking Energy Network opened by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester

The Viking Energy Network Centre in Jarrow was officially opened by a royal visitor

The Viking Energy Network Centre in Jarrow was officially opened by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester on Wednesday, 8th October, which Desco’s Gerard Hosford attended.

The event marked the official opening of the award-winning energy centre which provides energy to a number of council-owned buildings in Jarrow, including the leisure centre, three residential tower blocks and the town hall. The network began operating in October 2023.

Guests at the event included teams from businesses involved in the development and local school pupils who were involved in fun activities, demonstrating their learning of the cutting-edge technology and inspiring creative solutions of their own in respect of the future of energy.

The Energy Centre, built on a brownfield site owned by the council at Jarrow Staithes on the south bank of the River Tyne, extracts water from the River Tyne and uses Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) technology to feed a district energy network.

Desco designed the MEP services for The VENJ Energy Centre which generates and supplies energy to council buildings through a network of pipes from the energy centre. Energy comes from a combination of heat generated by the WSHP, a gas-fired combined heat & power (CHP), solar power and a private wire electrical network with storage battery, providing a back up source if the system fails.
