New Net Zero Carbon Building Standard Released
Version 1 of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard released
This week marked a major milestone for the UK’s built environment with the release of Version 1 of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, the first cross‑industry, technically robust framework that finally defines what “net zero carbon aligned” means for buildings across the UK.
This new standard provides clear, measurable performance criteria covering operational energy, embodied carbon, fossil‑fuel avoidance, renewable energy provision, evidence requirements and verification protocols. It moves the industry from ambition to accountability, creating a consistent, science‑based approach to delivering genuinely net zero buildings.
Developed collaboratively by CIBSE, RIBA, RICS, IStructE, UKGBC, BRE, the Carbon Trust and LETI, Version 1 builds on extensive pilot testing and incorporates new annexes supporting landlord/tenant routes and practical‑completion “on‑track” certification to allow building owners to market their Net Zero Carbon claims with confidence.
Desco are proud to have been a part of the Pilot Programme, using one of our projects, Royal Russell School, as one of the sample test cases. Participating in the pilot gave us early insight into the Standard’s real‑world application and has helped to prepare us for the launch of Version 1.
Independent verification goes live in Q2 2026, meaning buildings will finally be able to formally demonstrate Net Zero Carbon Alignment, a huge step towards measurable action in the sector.
The Standard requires mandatory operational and embodied carbon assessments to be carried out during the design and construction stages which must undergo a third-party verification process.
At Desco, we’re committed to supporting our clients on their whole life decarbonisation journey and this Standard allows us to support their Net Zero Carbon ambitions through low carbon construction, fabric first design, optimal HVAC solutions and assisting the embedding of circular design principles.
A big moment for the sector and an exciting step towards a credible, aligned net zero future.
