Desco’s Park View Student Village Shortlisted for CIBSE Building Performance Awards

Desco are delighted to announce that Park View Student Village project has been successfully shortlisted for the 2020 CIBSE Building Performance Awards in the Collaboration and Residential Project of the Year categories. The awards recognise projects that demonstrate exemplar engineering and the people behind the designs.

Park View Student Village (PVSV) is a £75 million redevelopment and creation of a new student accommodation for Newcastle University. It replaces the previous limited student accommodation and offers a new 1,261 modern en-suite bedroomed development, comprising four, six, seven and eight-bedroom flats, as well as 16 single studios across six residential blocks. The new development consists of a total of 8 buildings, 6 towers of student accommodation an energy centre and external substation.

The 6 towers of student accommodation have been largely created through volumetric modular construction, built offsite in a controlled factory environment then transported to be assembled and arranged to form the fully furnished student living accommodation. This method improved the final outcome quality and reduced programme time – enabling the August 2018 handover date to be met and to allow students to move in before the start of the academic term. PVSV is an example of innovation meeting the needs of today and tomorrow’s student.

At every stage of the project, the whole design team, contractor, principal sub-contractor, client and student body worked together to identify and resolve any issues that arose. The approach taken was of one overall team with different rather than competing interests but a common goal in providing the best student accommodation and experience possible. Engagement with students and the local community was central and their comments, suggestions and ideas were incorporated into various aspects of the final design.

We are looking forward to attending the Awards Ceremony on the 11th February 2020 where the winners will be announced. The full shortlist announcement is featured in the CIBSE Journal December’s edition. A special thanks to our colleagues at Galliford Try Construction and Newcastle University for support with our submission.
