Newcastle City Police HQ
Desco was appointed to carry out the MEP services design on this multi-million-pound project to provide a new state-of-the-art police area command headquarters in Newcastle City Centre for Northumbria Police Authority.
The client’s objective was for the new development to provide a fit-for-purpose base for its modern policing requirements, comprising a comfortable, safe, secure, workplace for the police and police staff and a pleasant place for the public to visit – with the aim of encouraging the public to get closer to the police.
The complex project comprised the reconfiguration and refurbishment of an existing Grade II listed warehouse and Kings House – an existing office building, together with a new build three storey construction to link together the two existing buildings. All works were undertaken while working on the constrained city centre site just one metre from a live railway, the East Coast Main Line (ECML).
The completed 13500m2 development, which is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, accommodates approximately 600 people, including police officers, community support officers and police staff and scientific support team areas. The project comprised a three-storey operations centre, six-storey office, 50-cell custody suite, car parking and an energy centre.
